Allergies are a widespread problem which may show up in a variety of complaints. Your nose runs constantly or is stuffy, your throat feels scratchy, your skin is itchy — all of the above can be signs of an allergy.
The fundamental procedure for getting a result is a skin test (prick test), which may be supplemented by a blood test. Therapy is just as multi-layered as the symptoms.
The guiding principle is: Local (e.g. specific nasal sprays) takes precedence over systemic (allergy tablets). If the symptoms are very strong, a "desensitisation" may be helpful, which treats the hyper-sensitive reaction of the immune system directly. This can also prevent secondary diseases, such as for instance asthma.
Feeling insecure when moving and dizzy are problems that occur very frequently — especially with older people. Usually, the cause can be found in the ear. If you often have attacks of vertigo therefore, it is essential to have the function of the auditory and balancing organs tested, and the first place to approach is ENT.
If there is a problem with function in these organs, vertigo often becomes history once normal function has been restored. If the problem is not to be found in the balance organs/the ear, vertigo attacks can for example also have neurological, orthopaedic or even psychological causes.
Everyone has noises in the ear — but usually only for a short time! But if the ringing, whistling or humming is constant and lasts for longer than 2-3 days or is unusually loud, a visit to ENT is essential.
A hearing test can let us clarify if for example there may have been a sudden hearing loss. Usually, however, noises in the ear indicate a reduction in hearing that has existed for some time or more rarely a malfunction in the cervical spine or the mandibular joint.
The therapies for tinnitus are as varied as the causes, which is why we offer a totally individual consultation in our ENT Joint Practice.
Snoring can be most unpleasant, particularly for your partner! But that's not the only problem — snoring can also be a symptom of disease, for sleep apnoea for instance. Tiredness during the day, poor performance and long-term internal medical problems may be the result.
It is therefore important to clarify where the snoring originates — especially if it is irregular. It is quite easy to find out at home whether this is the case. By the way: Every second person snores as they get older. This means that it is a particularly important situation if children are snoring, as their sleep is then often highly disturbed.
